From the Goetia:
“…appeareth in the form of a Monster; but after a while, at the Command of the Exorcist, he putteth on the shape of a Man. His Office is to make one knowing in Astrology, Geometry, and other Arts and Sciences. He teacheth the Virtues of Precious Stones and Woods. He changeth Dead Bodies, and putteth them in another place; also he lighteth seeming candles upon the Graves of the Dead.”

More distinctively, he is associated with death. The grimoires say he moves dead bodies from one place to another and lights candles on the graves of the departed. While this description has often been taken literally, it is better understood symbolically: moving the dead from this world into the next and illuminating their path across the threshold.

Connolly identifies Bifrons as a necromantic spirit, one who can be invoked for funerary rites, ancestral work, and communication with the dead. Like Vine, he is a psychopomp, but Bifrons is far more singularly focused on the necromantic sphere. Where Vine’s powers spread into storm magick, psychic defence, and divination, Bifrons is concentrated on guiding the dead, helping practitioners understand death, and opening communication with ancestors.

Working with Bifrons can therefore enrich necromantic practice in three main ways:

  • Guidance of the Dead: Acting as a psychopomp to assist souls in their passage.
  • Ancestral Work: Aiding practitioners in honouring and connecting with their ancestors.
  • Death Mysteries: Deepening understanding of death and transition.

The Goetia Ritual book offers little of value, though one line stands out: he “enlivens a dead imagination and advances one confidently in the direction of their dreams.” This unusual phrasing suggests an additional layer of symbolism — not just guiding the dead, but awakening creative or visionary faculties within the living magician.

Other sources note the lack of detailed ritual material, which may reflect his primordial, chthonic nature.

If Vine is a versatile magician’s demon, Bifrons is firmly a necromancer’s spirit. His office is clear: to assist in the mysteries of death, communication with the departed, and the guidance of souls. For those walking the necromantic path, Bifrons offers both knowledge and companionship in one of the most profound aspects of magical work.
