ENN: Elan Typan Verrine
Verrine governs the areas of health and impatience.
One prevailing myth associates Verrine with a celestial descent, where the daemon emerged from the heavens bearing the gift of healing. In this narrative, Verrine is a benevolent force, a guardian spirit whose purpose is to alleviate suffering and restore balance to the human body and spirit. Whether through divine benevolence or arcane origins, Verrine’s mythological footprint spans various cultures and traditions, reflecting a universal human longing for healing and well-being.
Characteristics and Attributes
Verrine, like many daemons, is characterized by a duality that mirrors the complexities of human existence. While often revered as a healer, Verrine is not exempt from the dual nature inherent in many otherworldy beings—capable of both benevolence and malevolence. The daemon’s appearance, according to various accounts, ranges from ethereal and angelic to dark and imposing, embodying the paradoxical nature of her influence.
The key attributes associated with Verrine include:
Healing and Medicine: Verrine is primarily known for her association with healing and medicine. Many practitioners invoke the daemon in rituals or prayers seeking relief from ailments, both physical and spiritual. The image of Verrine as a divine physician has persisted throughout history, transcending cultural and religious boundaries.
Wisdom and Knowledge: Verrine is often depicted as a repository of ancient wisdom and esoteric knowledge. Those who seek the daemon’s guidance are said to gain insights into the mysteries of the universe, unlocking secrets that extend beyond the realm of conventional understanding. In this aspect, Verrine becomes a guide to the seekers of truth and enlightenment.
Guardian of Thresholds: Some traditions portray Verrine as a guardian of liminal spaces and thresholds, overseeing the transitions between life and death, health and sickness, and light and darkness. This aspect of Verrine’s nature highlights her role as a mediator between opposing forces, ensuring balance and equilibrium.
Influence on Healing Practices
The influence of Verrine extends beyond mythology and into the realm of healing practices. The daemon’s association with healing has made it a focal point for those seeking alternative and holistic approaches to well-being.
Mystical Healing Circles: Within occult circles and secret societies, Verrine has been invoked in healing rituals and ceremonies. These practices involve the use of symbols, incantations, and meditations to connect with the daemon’s healing energy. Participants in these circles believe that tapping into Verrine’s influence can bring about physical, mental, and spiritual healing.
Modern Alternative Medicine: In contemporary times, where holistic and alternative medicine have gained popularity, the influence of Verrine can be seen in practices that integrate the spiritual and metaphysical aspects of healing. Some practitioners blend traditional medical approaches with spiritual rituals and invocations of Verrine, viewing the daemon as a guiding force in the pursuit of well-being.
Although Verrine is strongly associated with health and healing, she is focused greatly on the aspects of natural medicines rather than the technical aspects such as we may find with someone like Marbas.
David Thompson – Daemons of High Magick: Verrine prefers to work in a holistic method, leading one to more natural remedies for ailments, but she will also assist any medical professional working for you in uncovering the cause of a particular illness. She will also work to make the treatments more effective. In one case, she facilitated the peaceful crossing-over of the ill person, who was in the end stages of inoperable cancer.
Mirta Wake mentions the aspect of impatience. She states “I asked what they’re good at and was told ‘interruptions’. If you need something interrupted, be it a major life event of someone that you hate (like a wedding), or a speech that you are dreading to give, you can count on Verrine.”
The Aix-en-Provence possessions were a series of alleged cases of demonic possession occurring among the Ursuline nuns of Aix-en-Provence (South of France) in 1611. One of the nuns, Louise Capeau claimed to be possessed by a devil named “Verrine”. When caught in inconsistent statements, Capeau responded “The Devil is the Father of Lies”. Father Louis Gaufridi was accused and convicted of causing the possession by a pact with the devil, and he was tortured by strappado and his bones dislocated. He was then executed on April 1611 by strangulation and his body burned. This event led to possessions spreading to other convents and a witch burning in 1611.
He is one of the nine demonic divinities written in the black book around 1312 AD. In the divinities he is considered the positive polarity; where Amducious is the negative polarity. In the divinities Verrine , Lucifer, and Leviathan take on the feminine aspect.
In reference to the black book as mentioned above – 1312 AD – The Nine Demonic Divinities (with obvious Christian influence to some degree) appears in the Black Book (Grimoire) of Thoman (Thomas?) Buchan. [Connolly, The Complete Book of Demonolatry]
Michaëlis’s classification – In 1613 the Dominican prior and French inquisitor, Sébastien Michaëlis wrote a book, Admirable History, which included a classification of demons as it was told to him by the demon Berith when he was exorcising a nun, according to the author.[a] This classification is based on the Pseudo-Dionysian hierarchies, according to the sins the devil tempts one to commit, and includes the demons’ adversaries (who suffered that temptation without falling). Verrine was also a prince of Thrones, just below Astaroth. He tempts men with impatience and is opposed by St. Dominic. (listed as having the aspect of impatience) [Wikipedia]
