From the Goetia:
“…appeareth in the form of a Lion, riding upon a Horse Mighty and Strong, with a Serpent’s Tail; and he holdeth in his Right Hand two Great Serpents hissing. His Office is to teach the Virtues of the Stars, and to know the Mansions of the Planets, and how to understand their Virtues. He also transformeth Men, and he giveth Dignities, Prelacies, and Confirmation thereof; also Favour with Friends and with Foes.”

Orias is a complex spirit whose imagery and powers bring together themes of astrology, transformation, and the balance of opposing forces. He appears in the Ars Goetia with a striking form and is associated with both physical and spiritual transformation, particularly in strengthening willpower and aligning with the higher self.

Orias is often approached as a teacher of astrology and planetary magic, but his influence also extends into personal transformation. Connolly describes him as a “personal trainer for the willpower”—a spirit who supports not the act of physical training itself but the willpower needed to commit to and follow through on such goals. In this way, he can be invoked for fitness, discipline, and perseverance, as well as for strengthening resolve in broader aspects of life.

Practitioners report varied experiences with Orias. Mirta Wake described feeling a snake-like current moving through her heart, one stream upwards toward the third eye and another downward, interpreted as a uniting of forces from above and below, bringing about a meeting in the middle realm. This aligns Orias with the work of uniting with the higher self or Holy Guardian Angel.

Jehannum presents a much darker vision of Orias, describing him as presiding over transformation, prophecy, destruction, sadism, and blood magic. He is said to initiate witches into vampiric currents and to rule over succubi and incubi, directing them to unsettle the profane. Jehannum also recorded a vision of Orias as a predatory figure; pale, clawed, and fanged, appearing more menacing than the warmth others have felt from him. These contrasting accounts highlight how subjective spirit encounters can be, with different practitioners encountering very different aspects of the same entity.

The Goetia Ritual commentary explores the layered symbolism of Orias’ form. The lion is an ambivalent figure; solar and lunar, noble and ferocious. In its higher aspect, it represents majesty, strength, courage, and justice; in its shadow aspect, it embodies cruelty and ferocity.

The horse, too, carries dual associations with both solar and lunar symbolism, embodying life and death, swiftness and strength. The serpent tail suggests judgement, balance, and the entwining force of nature. The two serpents in his hand can be read as the caduceus, representing polarity and the union of opposites: healing and poison, health and disease, destruction and restoration.

In this way, Orias embodies the reconciliation of opposites, light and dark, solar and lunar, higher and lower, bringing them into balance within the magician.

Orias is a spirit of astrology, transformation, and balance. His role as a guide of willpower makes him particularly valuable for those working to reshape themselves, whether physically, mentally, or spiritually. He offers knowledge of the stars, dignity, and honour, while also embodying the mystery of uniting opposites within the self. Approaching Orias is to step into a current of transformation, discipline, and deep symbolic power.
