From the Goetia:
“…appearing in the Shape of a Mighty Raven at first before the Exorcist; but after he taketh the image of a Man. He teacheth the Art of Astronomy, and the Virtues of Herbs and Precious Stones.”

In most depictions of Stolas, he appears as an owl with crane like legs and a crown, however, we have mention in the Goetia of him appearing as a “Mighty Raven”. What I found interesting when watch The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was that they have depicted Stolas as a Raven, so they stuck to the original imagery from the Ars Goetia.

Connolly says, another teacher Daemon. Invoke him to learn witchcraft or sciences of the natural world, that being biology, geology, botany, etcetera. Wear an amulet of his sigil which can be made of clay or wood as well as tin while learning of these things and you will retain more information and attune yourself with the natural world.

So stolas, apart from teaching the art of astronomy and the virtues of herbs and precious stones can also teach you witchcraft, and within that aspect witchcraft, the sciences of the natural world, because witchcraft really is about getting in touch with the Land.

In The Goetia Ritual, coming back to the symbolism, ravens are ambivalent symbols for they are the harbingers of prophecy, but also are connected with the God of the gods of the dead, and hence war and destruction. The following however was very interesting. I couldn’t however find any evidence of it, so take it with a pinch of salt. In the symbolism of the fall of Adam and Eve, the Raven appears on the Tree of Knowledge from which Eve gathers and tastes the forbidden fruit. It acts as an omen, portending a significant event.
