From the Goetia:
“…appeareth in the Form of a Lion, riding on a Black Horse, and bearing a Viper in his hand. His Office is to discover Things Hidden, Witches, Wizards, and Things Past, Present and to Come. He at the command of the Exorcist will build Towers, overthrow Great Stone Walls, and make the Waters rough with Storms.”

The spirit’s name is most commonly written as Vine, which in plain English would sound like “vine” (rhymes with “wine”). Some practitioners, myself included, prefer the pronunciation “Vinay.” Ultimately, the best approach is to ask the spirit directly what they wish to be called.

Vine is often considered a magician’s demon, one especially well-suited for practitioners of magic and demonolatry. His domains include:

• Knowledge and Sorcery: Vine is invoked to deepen magical understanding and reveal astral grimoires. He can guide practitioners towards greater insight in both physical and astral realms.
• Divination: He is useful in hydromancy, pyromancy, storm divination, and other oracular arts.
• Protection: Vine is a powerful ally for psychic shielding, warding, and banishing. He teaches self-defence, strengthens combative skills, and defends against hostile sorceries.
• Necromancy and Psychopomp Work: Vine can act as a guide for the dead, making him a valuable spirit for those working in necromancy or death-centred practices.
• Healing and Vitality: He creates thought-forms to improve health, teaches healing methods, and can enhance physical fitness.
• Elemental Power: He conjures storms, agitates the seas, and can summon sea serpents.

His role as a teacher and guide makes him an excellent spirit for solitary practitioners seeking greater confidence in their craft, as well as those looking for stronger community ties.

While the Goetia’s traditional ritual material concerning Vine is, frankly, of little value in practice, the spirit himself is anything but. He embodies the essential skills magicians must cultivate: protection, divination, defence, and wisdom.

Vine is a versatile and powerful spirit whose presence enriches any magician’s work. For those drawn to necromancy, storm magick, or the pursuit of deeper occult knowledge, he is an ally worth seeking out.
