Agnesse says:
“There is something mysterious about creation. You and I, not being separate from the creation, partake of that mystery. This mystery is so great, that even the Gods partake of it, and draw their essential being from it. The Great Queen herself conceals this mystery, and derives existence from it. How great, indeed it is, and yet, it is no god or being itself. It is something both greater than a god, and yet, not “greater” than anything at all. To think of it in those terms is to miss the point completely.
The great God of Light, who is the Master of the Witches and the Wise People, he is a living reflection of that mystery, by which it is made known or accessible to us, by the mysteries of the Craft. Experience of this mystery, in a way, is True self-knowledge in the deepest sense.
Do you wish to find this mystery? I cannot show it to you, but by my words, and by your own experiences, it may yet rise in your awareness, as a mysterious insight. Experience of this mystery is not in the realm of the rational, young mind, and yet, it gives rise to that as well. It is ancient, and yet, without age. What years are old? Listen closely, for the doorway to the greatest power is in this mystery. True Cunning Light is nothing more than the reflection of this mystery shining on the lower waters. Listen now:
Look at the world around you. The trees, the sky, the waters. How do you see it? By what agency? You see it with your eyes. Your eyes can see everything in the world, except one thing. What can they not see?”
She continues:
“Point with your finger at these trees, at me, at the sky. You can point at everything in the world, except one thing. What can your finger not point at?”
She hands you a knife from beneath the folds of her dress.
“With this, you could cut anything. You could notch the bark of these trees, saw at stones and grasses, cut into the flesh of a person or skin a dead animal. It can even cut through the air or wind, which parts effortlessly around it’s blade. But what is the one thing that this knife-blade cannot cut, or even attempt to cut?”
She smiles mysteriously at you.
“Think deeply on this, and the answer will come to you. The eyes, they see all except one thing…what? The finger can point at all things, except one thing….what? The knife-blade can cut or stab into anything except what? When you find this answer, you will understand the relationship of the “mystery” to “yourself”.
The same reason that the eye, the finger, and the knife-blade cannot see or point or cut at that which is the answer to this riddle, is the same reason why the mystery is so obvious to you, and yet you cannot directly, consciously experience it. And yet, by mystery, you can experience it.
Again, think carefully, and the answer will come to you.”
